Controlling an Effective Gestational Diabetes diet

A: Gestational diabetes is caused, in part, by hormonal changes in a woman''s body due to pregnancy. The placenta begins to produce a hormone that reduces the likelihood of a woman developing low blood sugar, which creates a certain level of insulin-resistance. Insulin is used by the body to remove excess sugar from the blood stream. Most women can make enough insulin, despite this resistance, to keep their blood levels stable, but some women (approximately 4%, according to the American Association of Diabetes) end up with high blood sugar, or gestational diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, you need to follow your doctor''s advice to protect both your health and the health of your baby. For me, summer means fresh fruit and vegetables. The problem is that fresh fruit is something that needs to be limited on the diabetic diet. Any suggestions on how to incorporate it the diet without messing with the blood sugar?

A: Fresh fruits are great, just don''t overdo on the amounts. I buy small red delicious apples, the smaller tangerines, and yes even bananas. Almost any fruit is good. Just take smaller amounts at a time. For instance I tried a breakfast of one boiled egg, a small tangerine and a banana...and I got along just fine, and I found that I could even take less insulin! Sounds weird I know! Just try small changes at first until you learn how your body reacts. Also, the amount of activity in your routine is very important. Don''t eat and just lounge around. Do something physical ... exersise, housework, gardening, etc. Check your blood sugar after your ''new'' meal so you can tell how yor body reacts and to see if you need to make a correction before you either dip or go up too much. I had the same...

diabetic diet to loss weight

A: Well, since you''re already on a restricted diet for diabetes, and you still need to lose weight, the first thing you should cut back on is fat! Cut out greasy foods, gravies, heavy sauces. You''re diet is probably restricted as far as starchy food already, like breads, pasta and potatoes, and of course sugary foods and snacks. There are natural sugars in fresh fruit and some vegetables, but this is your best option for good health. Lean meats, fish and eggs are excellent sources of protein. Bake instead of fry is a good rule to follow! Drink lots of water, and get as much exercise as possible! Not just good for weight loss, but for circulation and digestion! Good luck and stay healthy!...
